Stay Alert: Rising LPG Scams

Beware of fake LPG booking scams.

Dear Saurabh Kumar,   LPG-related scams are on the rise, in which fraudsters impersonate gas agencies, oil companies or government officials to carry out frauds. Fraudsters target bank accounts through fake booking links and urgent KYC update calls, often using WhatsApp or SMS. They create panic about service disconnection or price hikes, enticing victims to click phishing links, install malicious APK files or share OTPs, resulting in unauthorised bank transfers and stolen credentials. How this Scam Works Fraudsters typically   •   Contact you, claiming that your LPG subsidy has been blocked or stopped   •   Insist on urgent KYC updates to prevent gas disconnection   •   Share fake links for subsidy verification or LPG booking   •   Request confidential details such as OTP, Debit Card / Credit Card information or UPI approvals.   Warning Signs Be cautious if you notice   •   Calls / SMS messages from unknown or suspicious numbers   •   Messages creating a sense of urgency or panic   •   Links that are not of the official websites of LPG providers or the government   •   Any request for OTP, PIN or banking credentials.   How to Stay Safe   •   Never share OTP, PIN, CVV or passwords with anyone   •   Avoid clicking on unverified links or attachments   •   Always verify requests through your authorised LPG distributor   •   Use only official websites / apps of oil / gas companies for bookings and updates.   Report a Fraud If you are a victim of online fraud, reach out to the National Cyber Crime portal at cybercrime.gov.in, call the helpline on 1930 and call ICICI Bank’s helpline on 18002662. If you have received any malicious / phishing / suspicious e-mails or calls, please report them to Sanchar Saathi at sancharsaathi.gov.in and to ICICI Bank at antiphishing@icici.bank.in   Remember   •   Banks and LPG agencies will never ask for confidential details over calls, SMS or links   •   Your awareness is the strongest safeguard against fraud.
