Digital blackmailing is one of the fastest-growing cybercrimes. Offenders typically lure victims into intimate conversations or video calls and then threaten to publish the content unless paid. The emotional distress and financial loss can be severe. The best defence is awareness and early action.   Protect yourself before it happens   Cybercriminals prey on trust, vulnerability and privacy gaps. A few simple precautions can shield you from becoming a target:   •   Never share personal or intimate content with strangers   •   Enable strict privacy settings on all social platforms   •   Avoid engaging in flirtatious online chats with unknown persons   •   Cover webcams when not in use   •   Educate youth about consent, privacy and digital safety   If you become a target   If someone threatens, blackmails or demands money after obtaining your private content, remember:   •   Do not pay - Paying rarely stops the threats   •   Stop all communication immediately and block the scammer   •   Take screenshots and preserve all evidence   •   Report the crime & inform your local police or cyber cell   •   Seek mental health support and talk to someone you trust   Speak up and report   Cybercriminals depend on silence and shame. Protect yourself and your loved ones by staying alert and informed.   •   Report online fraud on the National Cyber Crime portal at cybercrime.gov.in , call on the helpline number 1930 or call ICICI Bank’s helpline on 1800 2662.   •   If you have received any malicious/phishing/suspicious e-mails or calls, please report these to Sanchar Saathi at sancharsaathi.gov.in/ and to ICICI Bank at antiphishing@icicibank.com
