Spot fraudulent online chats early

Online relationships can begin with compliments and affection but for many, they end in financial and emotional exploitation.

Scammers cleverly build trust, create emotional bonding and then manipulate victims into sending money or sensitive information. Staying alert is the best way to avoid being exploited.

Spot the warning signs early

Be cautious of strangers who quickly express deep affection or talk about destiny or soulmates.

Avoid individuals who refuse video calls or keep postponing real meetups.

Never send money, crypto or gift cards to an unfamiliar person.

Stay alert if they share dramatic stories - urgent medical needs, strained relationship, stranded travel, customs issues or ‘guaranteed’ investment opportunities.

Protect yourself online

Verify: Run a reverse image search to verify if their photos are stolen.

Avoid sharing personal data, intimate content or financial information.

Do not download suspicious apps or click on unverified links promoting trading, crypto or investment platforms.

Report

Any online connection that asks for money, creates urgency or requests secrecy is a red flag.

Report online fraud on the National Cyber Crime portal at cybercrime.gov.in, call on the helpline number 1930 or call ICICI Bank’s helpline on 1800 2662.

If you have received any malicious/phishing/suspicious e-mails or calls, please report these to Sanchar Saathi at sancharsaathi.gov.in and to ICICI Bank at antiphishing@icicibank.com
